What is EMDR Therapy?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) therapy is an evidence-based treatment approach that helps individuals heal from the distressing symptoms of psychological trauma and other negative life experiences. Developed by Dr. Francine Shapiro in 1987, EMDR therapy involves the client focusing on aspects of distressing memories or images while administering bilateral stimulation (such as eye movements, taps, or tones) to facilitate the brain's natural healing process. This therapeutic technique aims to process distressing memories, reduce their impact, and enable clients to develop more adaptive coping mechanisms. EMDR therapy is widely recognized for its effectiveness in treating post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and has also been successfully used to address anxiety, depression, and various other mental health challenges.
